Did You Know?

The Rosy Raspberry – According to legend, when the Greek god Zeus was a baby and the sounds of his crying echoed through the mountains, the nymph Ida searched for raspberries to soothe him. Raspberries are a member of the rose family.

The All American Blueberry – The blueberry was once known as the star berry because of the pointy flower calyxes that mark their tops, blueberries have grown wild in North America for thousands of years. They were considered a staple among Native Americans who smoked the berries (to preserve them ) and pounded them into venison to flavour the meat (a meal the Indians in the Northwest Territory once shared with explorers Lewis and Clark).

The Scrumptious Strawberry – Ever wonder how many seeds are in (make that on) a strawberry? Two hundred to be exact.

The Popular Peach – This juicy fruit which has been around since prehistoric times, is considered a symbol of longevity in China, where it was first cultivated. Spaniards eventually brought it to this continent, and today it’s the third most popular fruit (the orange and apple claim first and second place).

The World Traveling Watermelon – Cousin to the cucumber (have you ever noticed that both of them grow on vines and have green peels?). The watermelon is believed to have first taken root in South Africa’s Kalahari Desert. And it’s frequent appearance in hieroglyphics also suggest that it was being cultivated in India and Egypt as early as 2500 B.C.
