SUNDOWNERS Visits Fort Malden & Toddy Jones Splash Pad!
Sundowners children were off again on Tuesday, despite the weather that was threatening rain. Children were very excited to be on the bus to Fort Malden National Historic Site in Amherstburg, Ontario and to spend time experiencing what life was like back in 1812. Children stepped back in time and got a glimpse of what military life was like almost 200 years ago. The children learned that the Fort played an important role in both the War of 1812 and the Rebellion of 1837. There were a number of activities for the children to experience history and have some fun while doing it. Kids learned the basic of solider skills, dressed up in military uniforms, held muskets, marched the grounds and followed orders. Children were able to walk the historic grounds of the Fort along the Detroit River and to visit a variety of buildings including the “kitchen” where they participated in a hands-on experience rolling dough using a large wooden rolling pin. Next the children moved onto the soldiers barracks which were restored and updated with brick in 1819. I think the children really enjoyed their visit and that they were able to immerse themselves into what life back then would have been like.
Next the children walked across the street to the Toddy Jones Park and Splash Pad. They were able to cool off and play in this open area interactive SPLASH PAD! What a great day of learning about the areas local historical and significant history…a picnic in the park and fun at the Toddy Jones Splash Pad.
